Note: While Armored Protection™ Surface provides a significant improvement over
standard laminates in resistance to normal wear, it is not more resistant to purposeful vandalism such as damage from knife cuts.
The key to the construction of Nevamar's Armored Protection™ laminate is a very thin
deposit of aluminum oxide on the conventional melamine surface of the laminate. This layer
is so thin that it does not obscure the color or pattern of the sheet. But the layer
protects the surface from scuffing, abrasion and gloss change not only during fabrication, but in the finished application as well.
The properties of aluminum oxide used in Armored Protection™ laminate have led scientists
and other manufacturers to attempt to use it to improve abrasion resistance. However,
because it is almost inert and difficult to attach, aluminum oxide always had to be used in
a thick layer. This caused excessive tool wear and obscured the color or pattern.
