Countertops That Are Environment Friendly

IceStone Countertops Incorporates Recycled Materials With Concrete Countertops

icestoneYou probably think you've seen enough ice this winter to last a lifetime. But here's some you might want to take a closer look at if you are redoing your kitchen: IceStone for countertops.

IceStone, distributed by Hart Stoneworks of Colorado Springs, has been selected as one of the nine "hot new products" at the Colorado Garden & Home Show, which starts Saturday and goes through Feb. 24 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

What's so hot about IceStone?

For starters, it's green — not colorwise, but environmentally. It's the only durable surface endorsed by the U.S. Green Building Council, which has some installed at its Washington, D.C., headquarters.

IceStone is made from 100 percent recycled materials, including crushed glass from such items as beer and pop bottles, in a concrete base. There's even some crushed mother of pearl from discarded oyster shells. It ends up looking much like a sparkly natural granite or man-made quartz, but without the petroleum products in it.

Care for IceStone as you would granite: Clean it with soapy water and use a waterproof sealer once a year. It costs about the same as finequality granite, about $120 a square foot, delivered and installed, and comes in 27 colors.

It's just now starting to be sold in Colorado, says Chris Geiger, sales manager of Hart Stoneworks, which fabricates IceStone. The slabs are made by IceStone in Brooklyn, N.Y., by pouring glass and cement into slab molds. It is then cured and polished, and shipped to Colorado for cutting and installation.

Besides countertops, Ice-Stone can be used for backsplashes, shower surrounds and commercial flooring. But Stoneworks does only countertops for now, Geiger says. See Ice -Stone at the showroom, 2155 Victor Place. For more information, call 277-7484.

You can also see it at the home and garden show sponsored by the Housing and Building Association of Colorado Springs, Feb. 29- March 2 at Phil Long Expo Center.
